Natural Gas


Natural gas is a hydrocarbon gas mixture consisting primarily of methane (CH4), but commonly includes varying amounts of other higher alkanes and usually small amounts of impurities such as water vapour (H2O), hydrogen sulphide (H2S) and carbon dioxide (CO2).
Natural gas must be processed to minimise impurities before it can be used as a fuel. Five stages are often required to convert raw natural gas into fuel gas:

  • extraction and gathering

  • gas purification

  • custody transfer and storage

  • compression

  • liquefaction

(H2O) Moisture as a non-flammable component in natural gas which absorbs heat, reducing the energy available and accelerating corrosion during custody transfer and gas storage. In LNG and CNG stations, because of the cryogenic temperature, even small amounts of moisture can cause condensation. Moisture or dewpoint analysis is a critical task to maintain gas quality.

(H2S) Hydrogen Sulphide, the toxic, flammable and corrosive gas, is present in raw gas. It can cause corrosion and lead to potentially fatal leaks or explosions if ignited. The H2S level is also a key to the determination natural gas quality. Removing H2S at all stages is of crucial importance to protect pipelines and gas storage equipment, and to ensure safety.

(CO2) Carbon Dioxide is an acid gas that occurs naturally in gas reservoirs and should be kept at a low level to prevent corrosion of pipelines and gas process equipment, and crystallisation of CO2 during cryogenic processes.
